Taxable income is the amount used to calculate income tax after applying the relevant rules to your income, permitted deductions and adjustments. It is not always the same as your salary, CTC or bank balance. Salary, bonuses and interest may all affect your tax calculation, while the final amount depends on the tax year, chosen regime, eligible deductions and special-rate income.

Which common receipts may count as income?

ReceiptTypical tax questionWhat to keep
Salary and allowancesWhich components are taxable and what exemptions apply?Form 16, payslips and employer breakup
Bonus or incentiveWhen was it paid or accrued, and how is it treated under the applicable rules?Bonus letter and payslip
Bank or deposit interestWhich head of income and reporting requirement applies?Bank interest certificate and statements
Other receiptsCould rent, capital gains, freelance work or other income apply?Relevant statements, invoices and records

How does gross income become taxable income?

Start by identifying income from each relevant source. Then classify it under the applicable tax rules, apply permitted exemptions and deductions for the chosen regime, and account for losses or adjustments where allowed. The result is the taxable income used in the tax calculation; tax rebates, surcharge, cess and special-rate items may then affect the final liability. The calculation is personal and year-specific.

Illustration only: a person may receive ₹9 lakh in salary, a ₹50,000 performance bonus and ₹12,000 bank interest. That does not by itself establish taxable income or final tax. The bonus and interest need to be considered, but exemptions, deductions, timing and other income could change the final figure. Do not assume an amount is tax-free just because tax was not deducted at source.

What records help you report income accurately?

  • Collect Form 16 and reconcile it with payslips and AIS/TIS information available from the tax portal.
  • Include variable pay and other employer payments shown in your records.
  • Check bank and deposit interest certificates, including accounts you rarely use.
  • Keep proof for deductions or exemptions you actually qualify to claim.
  • Review the correct assessment year or tax year and the regime selected for filing.

The Income Tax Department e-Filing portal provides official filing services and taxpayer information. Use the department’s current return guidance and calculator to verify how each receipt is treated. H View’s income-tax calculator can help with an estimate, but it cannot replace a return review where you have capital gains, business income, foreign assets or complex deductions.

Frequently asked questions

Is CTC my taxable income?

No. CTC is an employer cost figure that may include benefits and contributions. Taxable income is calculated under the applicable tax law.

Is bank interest taxable if tax was not deducted?

Tax deducted at source and final tax liability are different. Report income as required and check whether any exemption or deduction applies.

Are bonuses taxed separately from salary?

Bonus treatment depends on the applicable law and payment facts. Keep it in your records and verify the correct reporting for the relevant year.

This is general educational information, not tax advice. Tax law changes and individual facts matter; confirm your treatment through the Income Tax Department or a qualified tax professional.
