New vs Old Tax Regime: How to Compare for AY 2026–27
Compare India’s old and new tax regimes for AY 2026–27 using eligible deductions, taxable income and current official guidance.
For Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27, compare the new and old tax regimes using your taxable income, eligible deductions and exemptions, and the rules that apply to your income. The new regime is the default for many individual taxpayers, while eligible taxpayers may choose the old regime under the applicable process. A headline salary alone cannot tell you which option gives the lower tax.
What does AY 2026–27 refer to?
AY 2026–27 generally relates to income earned in the preceding financial year, 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, under the Income-tax Act, 1961 framework. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026 for Tax Year 2026–27 onwards. Do not mix the AY 2026–27 comparison with the new Tax Year terminology. The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026–27 guide for salaried individuals lists the relevant regime slabs and conditions.
How do the two regimes differ?
| Question | New regime | Old regime |
|---|---|---|
| Default? | Default for many individuals, subject to eligibility and rules | Must be selected where permitted |
| Deductions and exemptions | Fewer common deductions are available | More specified deductions and exemptions may be available if conditions are met |
| Best fit | May suit people with fewer eligible deductions | May suit people with substantial eligible deductions or exemptions |
| What to compare | Tax under the current AY slabs after permitted adjustments and rebate | Tax after eligible deductions and exemptions, with applicable rebate and conditions |
For example, a salaried person with rent, eligible investments and other qualifying deductions should calculate the old-regime taxable income accurately. Someone with few deductions may find the new regime simpler or lower-tax. These are only patterns; the calculation decides.
