What is the Ministry of Panchayati Raj?

The ministry's official introduction describes it as a branch of the Government of India that looks after decentralisation and local governance in the States, and handles all matters relating to Panchayati Raj and Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). It was created in May 2004 and is headed by a minister of Cabinet rank.

Here is a point worth remembering: India's federal system first divided powers only between the Union and the States. The 73rd and 74th Amendments added local governments, so India now has three tiers of government.

How is the Panchayati Raj structure organised?

The 73rd Amendment sets up three tiers, with the Gram Sabha as the foundation. States with a population of up to 20 lakh may skip the middle tier (Bihar State Finance Commission).

Easy way to rememberRead it from the bottom up as "S-P-S-P": Sabha, Panchayat, Samiti, Parishad. Members at every level are directly elected, while the chairpersons at the block and district levels are chosen indirectly from among the members.

Which Articles should you remember?
