Buying a Refurbished Phone? Check Battery, Warranty, Repairs and IMEI First
Refurbished phones can be a great deal or an expensive mistake. Check these four things, battery, warranty, repair history and IMEI, before you pay.
Before buying a refurbished phone, check four things: the battery health (aim for 85% or more), the warranty (who gives it, for how long and what it covers), the repair history (original screen and parts), and the IMEI (that it is genuine, matches the invoice and is not reported stolen). Also confirm the previous owner's account is removed and get a proper invoice.
Refurbished phones are one of the smartest ways to get a flagship at a mid-range price, and they keep good devices out of landfills. But "refurbished" can mean anything from a nearly new phone checked by the brand to a used phone with a cheap replacement screen and a tired battery. The difference is in the checks you do before paying.
What does "refurbished" actually mean?
| Label | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Brand certified refurbished | Inspected and repaired by the manufacturer, often with a brand warranty |
| Refurbished or renewed (marketplace) | Checked by a third-party seller; quality and warranty vary by seller |
| Open box | Returned or display unit, often nearly new |
| Used or pre-owned | Sold as is, sometimes with a basic seller check |
Grades such as "A", "Superb" or "Like New" are set by each seller and are not a common standard. Read what each grade means on that seller's page.
How do you check the battery?
The battery is the part most likely to be worn. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see maximum capacity, and on newer models the cycle count. Apple designs older iPhones to keep about 80% capacity at 500 cycles and says the iPhone 15 line-up keeps 80% after at least 1,000 cycles (Engadget). Many Android phones also show battery health or cycle information in Settings, though the location varies by brand.
- 85% or above: good for a refurbished phone
- 80 to 85%: acceptable if the price reflects it
- Below 80%: budget for a battery replacement, or ask the seller to replace it
- Ask whether the battery was replaced, and whether with a genuine part

Ask three questions: who gives the warranty (the brand or the seller), for how long, and what it covers. A six-month or one-year warranty that includes the battery and display is much more useful than a short warranty that covers only "manufacturing defects". Also note the return window, and test the phone fully within it.
How do you check repair history?
- On iPhone: go to Settings > General > About and look for "Parts and Service History". It can show if the screen, battery or camera was replaced and whether the parts are genuine.
- Look closely at the screen: uneven colours, a yellow tint, poor touch response or a lifting edge can indicate a cheap replacement.
- Test every function: cameras (front and back, all lenses), speakers, microphones, charging port, buttons, fingerprint or Face ID, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and both SIM slots.
- Check for water damage signs such as fogging inside the cameras.
How do you check the IMEI in India?
This is the step most buyers skip, and it matters legally. A phone that was reported lost or stolen can be blocked on Indian networks.
IMEI check in three steps
The Department of Telecommunications has advised citizens to use the KYM (Know Your Mobile) service to verify devices, by sending "KYM <IMEI>" by SMS to 14422, or by using the Sanchar Saathi app or portal (Fonearena). The result shows device details such as the brand and model. If it does not match the phone in your hand, walk away. The government's CEIR portal on Sanchar Saathi is also where owners block and unblock lost or stolen handsets.
Final checks before you pay
- The previous owner's Apple ID or Google account is fully removed (no Activation Lock or account lock)
- The phone is reset and starts the setup screen fresh
- The phone still gets software updates; check the brand's update policy
- You get a proper invoice with the IMEI, seller name and GST details
- The price is meaningfully lower than a new phone with similar features

Refurbished phones are a great option for students and for parents who want a good camera without flagship prices. But do the checks yourself, or take someone who knows phones. A neat box and a sticker that says "certified" are not proof. A ten-minute check protects you from a phone that dies in three months.
His Insight
Price the risk. If a refurbished phone costs 70% of a new one, has 82% battery health and a three-month seller warranty, the "saving" can vanish after a battery replacement and one repair. Compare the total cost, including a likely battery change, with a new mid-range phone that has a full brand warranty.
H View Verdict
A refurbished phone is a smart buy when the battery is healthy, the warranty is clear and meaningful, the repair history is clean and the IMEI checks out. Buy from sellers with a real return window, verify the IMEI with KYM, and make sure the previous owner's account is removed. If any check fails, there will always be another phone.
