Remarketing, also called retargeting, means showing ads to people who have already visited your website, used your app or interacted with your business. Because these people already know you, remarketing reminds them to come back and finish what they started, such as an enquiry or a purchase.

Most visitors do not buy on their first visit. They compare options, get distracted or wait for payday. Remarketing gives you a second chance to reach them instead of starting from zero with strangers.

How does remarketing work?

  1. A tag is added to your website. This small piece of code from an ad platform notes that a browser visited certain pages.
  2. Visitors are grouped into lists. For example, "everyone who visited the pricing page" or "people who added a product to the cart but did not pay".
  3. Ads are shown to those lists as they browse other websites, watch videos or search again.

Google now calls remarketing lists "your data" segments. Its help page on your data segments explains that you can show ads to past website visitors as they browse sites and apps, to people who interacted with your YouTube videos, and to past visitors when they search on Google again.

What kinds of remarketing are there?

TypeWho sees the adSimple example
Standard website remarketingPast visitors to your siteA coaching institute reminds visitors that admissions close soon
Dynamic remarketingVisitors who viewed specific productsAn online store shows the exact saree a visitor looked at
Search remarketingPast visitors who search againA clinic bids higher when a past visitor searches "dentist near me"

Are there limits a small business should know?

  • List size: Google says only segments with more than 100 active users are eligible to run ads (source). A very new or low-traffic site may need time before remarketing is possible.
  • Membership duration: for Search ads, Google caps how long someone can stay on a list at 540 days (source).
  • Restricted categories: Google's personalised advertising policies limit remarketing for sensitive topics such as health conditions, so some businesses cannot use it in the same way.

What about privacy?

Remarketing relies on tracking visits, so be transparent. Mention advertising cookies and tags in your privacy policy, follow each ad platform's rules, and respect visitors' choices about cookies. Avoid ads that feel intrusive, such as naming a specific product someone viewed when the topic is personal. Good remarketing feels like a helpful reminder, not surveillance.

When does remarketing make sense?

  • You already get steady website traffic but few people enquire or buy on their first visit.
  • Your product needs thought before purchase, such as courses, furniture, travel packages or professional services.
  • You have a time-bound reason to bring people back, such as a sale or a closing date.

It makes less sense if your site gets very little traffic, or if the page people return to is still confusing. Fix the page first; remarketing only brings people back to it. Watching CPA and ROAS will show whether it is paying off.

Her View

Limit how often the same person sees your ad. Seeing a reminder once or twice is helpful; seeing it everywhere for weeks can annoy a potential customer.

His Insight

Exclude people who have already converted. Showing a "Buy now" ad to someone who bought yesterday wastes money and looks careless.

Frequently asked questions

Is remarketing the same as retargeting?

Yes, the terms are used interchangeably. Google now uses the term "your data" segments in its Ads interface.

Can I do remarketing with a small budget?

Yes. Remarketing audiences are small and already interested, so modest budgets can work, provided your list is large enough to be eligible.

Do I need a developer to set it up?

Many website builders and WordPress plugins make adding the Google tag simple. More detailed setups, such as dynamic remarketing, may need technical help.

Can remarketing work on Facebook and Instagram too?

Yes. Meta offers similar audiences built from website visitors and people who engaged with your pages or posts, using its own tracking tools.
