E-Signature, Digital Signature or Aadhaar eSign: Which One Does Your Document Need?
"Please sign and send" can mean three very different things. Here's the plain difference between a simple e-signature, a digital signature certificate (DSC) and Aadhaar eSign in India, and when each one is enough.
A simple e-signature is an image of your signature placed on a document; a digital signature (DSC) is a cryptographic certificate issued by a licensed certifying authority; Aadhaar eSign signs electronically after Aadhaar-based authentication. Everyday letters and forms often accept a simple e-signature, while filings and agreements that specifically ask for a DSC or Aadhaar eSign need those methods.
An HR team emails your offer letter: “please sign and return.” A landlord sends a rental agreement. A company registration portal asks for a “digital signature.” They all sound similar, and many people assume a scanned or drawn signature will do for everything. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it won't be accepted at all.
What Is the Difference?
| Simple e-signature | Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) | Aadhaar eSign | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A picture of your signature (drawn, typed or uploaded) placed on the PDF | A certificate-based signature that cryptographically binds the document to you | An online electronic signature after Aadhaar-based authentication through an eSign service |
| Who issues it | You make it yourself | A certifying authority licensed under the Controller of Certifying Authorities | Licensed eSign service providers |
| Typical uses | Offer letters, internal forms, declarations, everyday agreements | Filings and processes that specifically require a DSC | Online agreements and applications that offer eSign |
| Detects later tampering? | No | Yes | Yes |
Are Electronic Signatures Legal in India?
Yes, within the framework of the Information Technology Act, 2000. As Adobe's summary of Indian e-signature law explains, electronic and digital signatures can have the same status as handwritten ones, certificate-based signatures must come from a CA recognised by the Controller of Certifying Authorities, and Aadhaar e-KYC is among the authentication techniques recognised for electronic signatures. The technical rules for eSign are published by the CCA in its eSign API specification.

According to the same Adobe summary, some documents must still carry a traditional wet signature, including:
- Negotiable instruments other than cheques, such as promissory notes and bills of exchange
- Most powers of attorney
- Trusts under the Indian Trusts Act, 1882
- Wills and other testamentary dispositions

When Is a Simple E-Signature Enough?
When the other party says it is. Many employers, colleges, landlords and businesses happily accept a signed PDF for routine documents. For those, the free H View PDF Editor & e-Sign lets you draw, type or upload your signature, place it on the page, add text, dates and ticks, and save, all in your browser. Our guide on how to sign a PDF and fill forms online walks through it.
Her View
Many women run family paperwork and small businesses without ever being told these differences. Then a filing is rejected and they're made to feel careless. A clear, simple explanation, which method is for which document, is a small piece of financial and legal confidence everyone deserves.

The key technical difference is integrity. A pasted signature image proves very little on its own; anyone could copy it. A DSC or Aadhaar eSign mathematically links the signature to the exact document, so any later change is detectable. That's why high-stakes filings insist on them, and why everyday letters usually don't.
H View Verdict
Match the signature to the document. Use a simple e-signature where it's accepted, a DSC or Aadhaar eSign where it's required, and a wet signature where the law still demands one. When unsure, ask before you sign.
