Fake Job Consultancy or Genuine Recruiter? Check These Warning Signs Before You Pay
Unemployed graduates and freshers are often told that finding a job is difficult without a…

A foreign job offer can feel like a life-changing opportunity.
The salary may be several times higher than what a candidate expects in India. The recruiter may promise free accommodation, flight tickets, food, visa support and immediate joining.
For an unemployed graduate or someone carrying family responsibilities, the offer can feel too important to lose.
But some overseas recruitment scams are far more dangerous than an ordinary financial fraud.
Victims have been lured abroad with fake offers for data entry, IT support, digital marketing, customer service and similar roles. After reaching another country, some have had their passports taken away and have been forced to participate in online scams inside guarded compounds.
In March 2025, India brought back 283 citizens who had been lured to Southeast Asia through fake job offers and made to engage in cybercrime and other fraudulent activities.
A high salary does not prove that a foreign job is genuine.
Before travelling, candidates must verify the employer, recruitment agent, visa, contract and exact workplace independently.
The candidate may receive an offer through:
The recruiter may promise:
The process may appear organised. The candidate may receive a contract, flight booking, company ID or visa document.
But documents sent through messaging apps can be fabricated.
The Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly advised job seekers to use registered recruiting agents and verify overseas opportunities through official channels. It also warns against fake jobs and illegal recruitment.
A recruiter may say:
“Travel first on a tourist visa. We will convert it into a work permit after you arrive.”
This is extremely risky.
Working on a tourist visa may violate the destination country’s laws. It can also leave the candidate without proper employment protection.
The Ministry of External Affairs advises job seekers not to rely on promises that a tourist visa will later be converted into a work visa. Complaints can be raised with emigration authorities when agents make such claims.
Do not travel for employment unless the visa category clearly permits you to work.
A candidate may be promised work in a city office but transported after arrival to a remote location or border area.
The actual role may be completely different.
Victims may be instructed to:
Refusing may lead to threats, confinement or demands for repayment of travel and recruitment costs.
This is why the employer’s legal name, workplace address and job duties must be confirmed before departure—not after landing.
A legitimate employer may need to inspect or copy a passport for lawful processing.
But permanently taking and withholding the original passport is a serious warning sign.
Without a passport, the worker may find it difficult to leave, approach authorities, check into accommodation or travel safely.
Before departure:
Do not hand over your passport to an agent merely because they claim it is required for “company security.”
Not every overseas opportunity is suspicious.
Millions of people build successful careers abroad through lawful recruitment and verified employers.
A genuine foreign job may offer:
Candidates should not reject every overseas offer out of fear.
They should approach the opportunity with evidence rather than excitement alone.
Fraudsters understand that professional-looking documents create trust.
Even a visa may not prove that the job, employer or promised role is genuine.
A candidate must verify the full chain:
The Ministry of External Affairs says registered recruiting-agent details can be checked through the official eMigrate system. In case of doubt, candidates can also verify the employer through the relevant Indian Mission.
Pause immediately when:
By October 2025, the government had notified thousands of illegal recruiting agents on the eMigrate platform, showing the scale of unsafe overseas recruitment.
Confirm the recruiting agent through eMigrate.
Contact the foreign employer using details found independently—not only those given by the agent.
Request a signed contract showing:
Also verify the visa directly through the issuing authority or authorised visa system.
Do not rely only on screenshots.
The person should avoid confronting traffickers in a way that creates immediate danger.
Where safely possible, they should contact:
The Ministry of External Affairs states that complaints involving recruiting agents can be taken to the Protector General of Emigrants, the relevant Indian Mission or the MADAD system.
Family members should preserve contracts, passport copies, tickets, chats, payment records and the last known location.
A foreign job can transform a life.
A fake foreign job can take away money, documents, freedom and personal safety.
Do not travel because the recruiter creates urgency or because the salary appears impossible to refuse.
Verify the recruiting agent, employer, visa, contract and destination independently. Never travel for employment on vague assurances that documents will be corrected later.
Most importantly, never allow anyone to isolate you from your passport, family or official support.
A genuine employer should be able to prove the opportunity before you board the flight.
Check whether the agent is registered and active through the official eMigrate system.
No. Do not depend on promises that a tourist visa will be converted after arrival.
An employer may need it temporarily for lawful procedures, but withholding it permanently is a serious warning sign.
Contact the employer independently and, when uncertain, seek verification through the relevant Indian Embassy or Consulate.
Share copies of your passport, visa, employment contract, flight ticket, employer address and recruiter details.
Complaints may be raised with emigration authorities, the relevant Indian Mission and through the MADAD grievance system.
