iPhone 18 Pro Craze in India: Why Are People Paying ₹1.65 Lakh and Still Queuing for It?

A smartphone priced at ₹1.65 lakh should, in theory, make most buyers stop and think. In India, however, the arrival of the iPhone 18 Pro produced the opposite reaction. On launch day, people queued outside Apple Stores in Mumbai and Noida, some reportedly waiting through the night even though the same phone could be ordered online and delivered much faster. The scenes immediately triggered two very different reactions: Apple fans saw enthusiasm for a long-awaited flagship, while others wondered why anyone would spend so much time and money to buy a phone.

The demand was not limited to social-media videos of queues. Counterpoint Research told The Times of India that its launch-day checks across 12 stores suggested initial iPhone 18 Pro demand was around 15–28% higher than the iPhone 17 Pro launch, with premium storage configurations and the Burgundy colour among the stronger sellers. That is still early demand rather than a full sales picture, but it shows that the excitement was not entirely manufactured by a few viral clips.

What makes the story more interesting is the price. Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro from ₹1,64,900 in India, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900. Move up the storage ladder and the numbers become even more dramatic: the 2TB iPhone 18 Pro reaches ₹3,14,900, while equivalent Pro Max configurations can go even higher.

So the real question is not whether the iPhone 18 Pro is expensive. It clearly is. The more interesting question is why so many people still want one immediately, even when older iPhones remain excellent and rival Android flagships can cost much less.

The Craze Is Not Only About Specifications

It would be easy to explain the excitement by listing the camera, processor and battery upgrades, but that would miss a large part of what Apple is actually selling.

An iPhone Pro launch is now part technology release, part status event and part cultural ritual. For many buyers, purchasing on launch day is not merely about replacing an old device. It is about participating in a moment, owning the newest version before everyone else and reinforcing an identity that may already be tied to the Apple ecosystem.

That does not mean every buyer is purchasing for status. Professional photographers, creators, developers, business users and people who keep a phone for four or five years can have perfectly rational reasons for buying an expensive flagship. The important point is that the iPhone 18 Pro serves several motivations at once, which is why analysing it only through specifications gives an incomplete picture.

What Do You Actually Get for ₹1.65 Lakh?

Apple has made several meaningful hardware changes this year.

The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, giving users more control over depth of field and allowing the camera system to adapt more flexibly to different lighting situations. Apple has also added new Pro camera controls and continues to support formats such as ProRAW, ProRes and Apple Log for users who work more seriously with photos and video.

Performance comes from the new A20 Pro, paired with a redesigned vapour chamber. Apple says the new thermal system has three times the surface area of the previous generation and enables up to a 40% gain in sustained performance over iPhone 17 Pro. The chip also includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and higher memory bandwidth aimed at on-device AI workloads.

Battery life has also improved substantially. Apple’s India specifications list up to 34 hours of video playback on iPhone 18 Pro and up to 43 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max, while fast wired charging can reach roughly 50% in around 15 minutes with a compatible 60W-or-higher adapter.

These are genuine improvements. The question is whether they matter enough to justify the price difference for an ordinary buyer.

iPhone 18 Pro India Pricing: The Reality Behind the Craze

Model Starting Price in India Who It Makes Sense For
iPhone 18 Pro 256GB ₹1,64,900 Buyers wanting the newest Pro experience without Max size
iPhone 18 Pro Max 256GB ₹1,79,900 Heavy users prioritising larger display and battery
iPhone 18 Pro 512GB ₹1,89,900 Creators storing more photos and video locally
iPhone 18 Pro 1TB ₹2,39,900 Professional camera/video workflows
iPhone 18 Pro 2TB ₹3,14,900 Niche professional users with very high storage needs

Apple also offers up to six months of No Cost EMI on eligible cards, instant cashback on selected payment methods and trade-in credit for eligible smartphones. Those options do not make the phone inexpensive, but they change the way buyers perceive the purchase.

A ₹1.65 lakh phone feels very different psychologically when presented as one large payment compared with a monthly EMI combined with cashback and a ₹50,000–₹80,000 trade-in credit.

That distinction matters more than brands often admit.

EMI Changes the Psychology of an Expensive Phone

One reason premium phones continue selling despite higher prices is that buyers increasingly think in monthly payments rather than total ownership cost.

If a person trades in a recent iPhone, receives cashback and finances the remainder, the purchase may feel like an upgrade costing a manageable monthly amount rather than a ₹1.65 lakh decision.

That does not make financing bad. EMI can be sensible when a buyer has stable income and genuinely needs the device. The problem begins when monthly affordability hides the real cost of the purchase.

A phone can feel “affordable” at ₹8,000 or ₹10,000 a month even though the buyer is committing more than many people spend on a laptop, refrigerator or several months of rent.

This is where the iPhone 18 Pro craze becomes partly about consumer psychology rather than technology.

The Camera Upgrade Is One of the Strongest Practical Reasons to Buy

Among all the changes, the camera may provide the clearest professional justification.

Variable aperture gives the main camera greater flexibility than a fixed-aperture design, allowing photographers and videographers to control light and depth more creatively. Combined with ProRAW, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and professional video controls, the iPhone 18 Pro is increasingly positioned as a small production tool rather than simply a phone camera.

That distinction matters for creators.

A wedding filmmaker, YouTuber, journalist or business owner producing regular social content may use the phone directly as part of their work. For that buyer, the cost can be easier to justify because the device helps produce revenue or replaces part of a separate camera setup.

For someone who mostly takes family photos, WhatsApp pictures and holiday selfies, the same hardware may be technically impressive but economically unnecessary.

A20 Pro Is Powerful, but Most People Will Never Push It Fully

Apple’s performance improvements are significant on paper.

The A20 Pro, improved cooling and higher AI throughput make the iPhone better suited to sustained gaming, high-resolution video processing and local intelligence features. Apple says its revised thermal design enables the highest sustained performance it has achieved in an iPhone.

The problem is that modern flagship processors have already passed the point where normal users struggle for speed.

Opening Instagram, paying through UPI, watching YouTube, browsing, calling and taking photos do not require cutting-edge sustained performance. Even an iPhone from two or three generations ago remains extremely fast for those tasks.

So the A20 Pro matters most to people doing work that can actually use it. For everyone else, it provides headroom and longevity rather than an immediately transformative daily experience.

Siri AI Gives Apple Another Reason to Push the Upgrade Cycle

The iPhone 18 Pro also arrives with Siri AI and Apple Intelligence, backed by a much stronger Neural Engine and increased memory bandwidth.

Apple is positioning Siri AI as a more contextual and capable system rather than the older command-based assistant people have known for years. The company says the new hardware is designed to accelerate more on-device intelligence while keeping privacy central to the experience.

This is strategically important because AI gives Apple another reason to separate newer devices from older iPhones.

Whether it becomes a reason to buy depends on execution. A genuinely helpful assistant that understands context, handles complex requests and works across apps could improve daily use considerably. If the features remain something buyers experiment with during the first week and rarely use afterward, then AI becomes another launch-day talking point rather than a reason to spend ₹1.65 lakh.

Why Stand in a Queue When the Phone Can Be Delivered?

This is perhaps the most fascinating part of the launch.

Reports described some buyers waiting overnight, while social-media users pointed out that quick-commerce services could deliver the device far faster. Moneycontrol highlighted reactions specifically mocking the contrast between long physical queues and rapid online delivery.

But the queue is not really about logistics.

For some buyers, launch day is an experience. There is excitement in entering the store, opening the box immediately, being among the first owners and sharing that moment online. Luxury brands have understood this behaviour for decades. Scarcity, exclusivity and public participation can make an expensive product feel more desirable precisely because obtaining it requires effort.

Apple has managed to turn a technology purchase into something closer to a cultural event.

That is not something competitors can easily reproduce simply by building a faster processor.

The Status-Symbol Factor Cannot Be Ignored

In India, the iPhone also carries a social meaning that goes beyond its technical capabilities.

A Pro-series iPhone is instantly recognisable. It can signal income, career progress, aspiration or membership in a certain consumer group. Social media amplifies that effect because phones appear constantly in mirror photos, travel posts, videos and everyday content.

This creates a cycle.

People see creators, celebrities, colleagues and friends using the latest iPhone. The device becomes associated with success or premium lifestyle. Buyers who already want the phone receive additional social validation for the purchase, while launch-day attention reinforces the idea that it is something desirable enough to queue for.

There is nothing inherently wrong with buying something partly because it feels premium. Cars, watches, clothing and jewellery are bought for exactly the same reason. Problems arise only when social pressure pushes someone into spending beyond what they can comfortably afford.

Rational Purchase or Emotional Purchase?

The iPhone 18 Pro can be both.

A professional creator replacing a four-year-old iPhone and using the camera every day may be making a rational productivity investment. Someone with an entire Apple ecosystem may value continuity with Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and iCloud enough to remain with iPhone rather than rebuild their workflow elsewhere.

A buyer upgrading from an iPhone 17 Pro mainly because Burgundy looks new is making a different kind of decision.

Neither buyer necessarily needs to be judged, but the distinction matters when deciding whether the phone is “worth it.”

A practical purchase should solve a problem. An emotional purchase should at least be affordable enough that enjoying it does not create financial stress afterward.

Who Should Actually Buy the iPhone 18 Pro?

The iPhone 18 Pro makes the most sense for buyers who can meaningfully use what it offers. That includes creators working heavily with photo and video, professionals who depend on the Apple ecosystem, mobile gamers who care about sustained performance, and users replacing a significantly older flagship after several years.

It makes far less sense for someone whose current iPhone already works perfectly and whose main reason for upgrading is fear of missing out.

For many buyers, an older iPhone 17 or 17 Pro can deliver most of the daily experience for substantially less money, especially when retailers discount previous-generation stock.

The smartest purchase is therefore not automatically the newest phone. It is the newest phone whose improvements you can actually explain before you buy it.

Her View

The launch-day excitement is understandable because technology purchases can be emotional. A phone is something we use every day, take everywhere and keep closer to us than almost any other expensive product. Wanting the newest and best version is therefore not difficult to understand.

What concerns me more is when price disappears from the decision because EMI makes it feel smaller. Spending ₹1.65 lakh is still spending ₹1.65 lakh, even when the amount is divided into monthly instalments. If the phone improves someone’s work, photography or daily life enough to justify that cost, the decision can make sense. If the purchase is mainly about being seen with the latest model, it is worth asking whether that feeling will still matter six months later.

His Insight

Apple’s greatest achievement with the iPhone 18 Pro may not be the A20 Pro or variable aperture. It is the company’s ability to make an increasingly mature product category continue to feel culturally important every September.

Smartphones no longer change dramatically every year, yet Apple has built an ecosystem, resale market, trade-in system and brand identity that keeps the upgrade cycle emotionally powerful. The new hardware improvements are real, but the demand is also being driven by ecosystem lock-in, financing, aspiration and the visibility that comes from owning the latest Pro model.

That combination is why the iPhone cannot be analysed like an ordinary Android specification sheet.

H View Verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro craze is not caused by one feature.

The camera is better, with variable aperture and more professional controls. A20 Pro brings stronger sustained performance and more AI capability. Battery life and charging have improved significantly, and Siri AI gives Apple another major software story. These are meaningful upgrades rather than cosmetic changes.

But none of those features alone explains why people wait overnight for a ₹1.65 lakh phone.

The deeper answer is a combination of technology, ecosystem loyalty, resale value, status, aspiration, financing and launch-day culture. Apple has built a product that people do not simply compare on specifications; they attach identity and expectation to it.

For creators, professionals and long-term Apple users, the iPhone 18 Pro can genuinely be worth its premium. For an ordinary user with an iPhone 16 or 17 that already performs perfectly, upgrading may provide far less value than the excitement suggests.

The H View take is simple: admire the technology, understand the psychology and buy only when the improvement matters more to you than the launch-day hype.

That is the difference between owning the newest iPhone and making the smartest purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the iPhone 18 Pro price in India?

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 for 256GB, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900. Higher-capacity configurations cost substantially more, with the 2TB iPhone 18 Pro reaching ₹3,14,900.

Why is there so much demand for the iPhone 18 Pro?

Early retail checks cited by Counterpoint Research indicated launch-day demand was around 15–28% higher than the iPhone 17 Pro launch. The demand appears to be driven by new camera features, A20 Pro performance, improved battery life, the Apple ecosystem, trade-ins and the broader cultural appeal of new Pro iPhones.

What is new in the iPhone 18 Pro camera?

The phone introduces a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, along with additional Pro controls and support for professional formats including ProRAW and ProRes.

How good is iPhone 18 Pro battery life?

Apple’s India technical specifications list up to 34 hours of video playback for iPhone 18 Pro and up to 43 hours for iPhone 18 Pro Max. Actual battery life depends on usage.

How fast does the iPhone 18 Pro charge?

Apple says it can reach about 50% charge in around 15 minutes when using a compatible 60W-or-higher USB-C power adapter.

Is iPhone 18 Pro worth upgrading from iPhone 17 Pro?

For most ordinary users, probably not unless the variable-aperture camera, improved battery life, sustained performance or new AI features are important to their workflow. The value is much stronger for professional creators and people upgrading from older devices.

Why do people queue for iPhones when they can buy them online?

For some buyers, launch day is part of the experience. Being among the first to own the phone, visiting the Apple Store and sharing the moment publicly can make the purchase feel more exclusive. Reports from India showed people waiting overnight even while others pointed out that rapid-delivery services could deliver the same phone much faster.

Does Apple offer EMI and trade-in on iPhone 18 Pro?

Yes. Apple currently advertises eligible No Cost EMI options, instant cashback and trade-in credit depending on the device and payment method.
